Appearances were deceptive, as he had been an SS officer at Auschwitz. He described what they had done there, and made no effort to conceal anything. The interviewer asked him why he was being so forthcoming. Perhaps he asked because he was hoping for some expression of remorse; if so, he was immediately disabused of any such notion. The interviewee still regarded what he had been a part of in the death camp as very important, if decidedly unpleasant, patriotic work, and he strongly objected to people denying that it had happened.
